Because the frame shell bore diameter is the only consistent and most important part of the press fit system, the bore size is the preferred system and will be used here. These bottom brackets will vary in the width of the dust sleeve used for that different widths. The term PF24 is for bearing adapters fitting a 24mm spindle that use a 41mm bore frame. The term PF30 is an early industry name used to distinguish this standard from the previous BB30 (PF42) standard. The frame shell has a smooth bore with an approximately 46mm inside diameter. The shell widths range in width from 68mm to 86mm. The cartridge bearings of the PF46 system use an adaptor of plastic or aluminum and are pressed into the bottom bracket shell.This unique bottom bracket shell is not a straight bore but has an internal bearing retainer built into the shell, similar to an integrated headset. Bearing outside diameters are 37mm. The frame bore is nominally 37mm. Spindle ODs may be either 19mm or 22mm. There is no adaptor or cup and the bearing is pressed directly into the frame. Like the Spanish standard, the bearing is pressed directly into the frame. American (Ashtabula) The American, or Ashtabula, standard uses a 51.5mm cup pressed into the frame. Both sides of the bottom bracket are right hand threaded. Parts in the Italian standard are usually marked as such. Not all Italian-made bikes use Italian Standard threading. French Threading The French threading standard is now considered obsolete. It uses a 35mm x 1mm pitch. Both non-drive and drive side cups use a right hand threading. The shell inside diameter is approximately 34mm. Not all French-made bikes use French Threading. Swiss Threading Also considered obsolete like the French threading, the Swiss Threading standard uses 35mm x 1mm pitch. These two types of bottom brackets are the so-called threaded bottom brackets, which feature a thread on both sides of the shell. There are 4 widths available with BSA bottom brackets; 68mm, 73mm, 83mm or 100mm. Other sizes, and particularly the 73 mm width, is commonplace with mountain bikes. The 83 mm and 100 mm dimensions have become rare these days. The diameter of a BSA bracket is between 33.6 and 33.9 mm. You turn it clockwise to lock it. The right part (drive side) is a reverse thread and has to be done up counter clockwise. A BSA equipped frame can be fitted with almost all types of cranks. They’re often found on Italian made bikes. The width is always 70 mm. Furthermore, and this is where it stands out, you always have to do up both sides of the bracket to the right. Thus the name Italian Thread. Not surprising on an Italian Pinarello road bike. The downside is that the right cup is prone to coming undone more easily. This is precisely why you see these bottom brackets less and less on modern bikes. The most important mark on the bottom bracket is 36 x 24. This means that the diameter of the thread is 36 mm and the thread turns 24 times per inch. The spindle always has a diameter of 30mm. This ensures a low weight and lots of stiffness. This is a precision task though. Even with a slight deviation the cranks won’t turn smoothly. Also a worn out BB30 Bracket easily shows play and starts to make creaking noises. Therefore the BB30 is being used less and less frequently. On road bikes, it’s always 68mm. With mountain bikes, 68mm is most common too, but sometimes the wider version with 73mm width can be found. If you want to use a Shimano crank, you need an adapter or a bottom bracket bearing which is placed in a special bearing tube. This also prevents creaking sounds. From the outside, you actually barely see the bottom bracket bearings.
