Although lacking information on recent developments, such as the widespread use of self-adhesives, the Standard Handbook of Stamp Collecting provides invaluable information on paper types and printing and perforation methods used on stamps issued before 1960. They range from simple bound volumes intended to hold a fixed number of stamps to large multi-volumed collections with loose leafed pages to allow for expansion as the collection grows. Preprinted albums which are commercially available are the mainstay of the stamp collecting hobby. However, many collectors prefer the flexibility of laying out their own album pages. The gamut ranges from worldwide albums, with only enough spaces for the common stamps and a few more, to one-country albums with spaces for every type of stamp known. The usual format is to print a black-and-white picture of the stamp in each space, reduced in size so that a real stamp will cover it up, and add a thin frame around the stamp. Captions range from minimal mentions of perforation or watermark, up to a paragraph giving a little background on the stamp's subject. Album pages are almost always one-sided; two-sided pages save space, but require interleaving sheets to prevent stamps from catching on each other. The arrangement of stamps on the page depends on the taste of the collector and the purpose of the collection. Traditionally page creation has been done by hand using pen and ink; in recent years, however, with the advent of personal computers, home-printed pages have become popular. Ready to print album files may be found on the web, both free and commercial, or created by the collector using general-purpose software such as Microsoft Word or Scribus, or by means of a dedicated stamp album page layout program such as AlbumEasy. This was followed by the “Improved”, and then the illustrated “Imperial” albums. http://florentineholding.com/images/72hm196-manual.pdf Present-day makers include Safe, Lighthouse (Leuchturm), Lindner, Palo, Scott, and White Ace. Once collectors have started using a particular brand, they have a strong incentive to stay with it, and the manufacturers offer annual updates for the stamps issued during the previous year.Stamp hinges were introduced soon after, allowing stamps to be removed without major damage to either the stamp or the album page. In the second half of the 20th century, stamp mounts were introduced. Mounts typically hold the stamp between two layers of plastic, with the front layer transparent, and are attached to an album page, allowing the stamp to be displayed without an adhesive touching the stamp. When properly used, mounts allow the stamp to be removed from the album in the same condition in which it was inserted.Careful collectors do not cram albums tightly together, so as allow for a bit of air movement through the pages, and to prevent gum oozing or sticking.By using this site, you agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. It’s also not often that you find a book containing as much valuable information as the Standard Handbook of Stamp Collecting, which is why I felt a need to review it. This review specifically covers the 1965 edition, which is part of my personal library. He then moved on to more esoteric areas of philately, such as collecting postal history and unusual uses for stamps. With the relatively recent widespread adoption of self-adhesive stamps and the use of less expensive printing methods than were previously used, some of the information presented in Cabeen’s work is arguably incomplete. Nevertheless, his detailed descriptions of various printing and perforation methods make the book an invaluable reference tool for anyone who collects stamps issued before 1960. The author presents a broad overview of the developments that led to the introduction of postage stamps. He also lists several phantom and bogus stamp issues occasionally encountered in older collections and accumulations. Cabeen went heavy on descriptive text and very light on illustrations, which is not necessarily a bad choice. In addition, it is not a particularly specialized work, but is rather an overview that will benefit the new collector and prove to be a handy reference for the more advanced philatelist. What’s your opinion. Would you advise another collector to buy it. Today, more than 5 million people in the U.S. alone collect, preserve, and trade or sell stamps. If you are considering becoming a “philatelist,” A.K.A. a stamp collector, as a hobby or an investment, there are a few things you should consider before you get started. One of the first things you’ll need to decide is what kind of stamp to collect. Stamps can be: Used stamps may be easier to collect and may also be collected for the cancellations on them. You can find stamps almost anywhere: If you’re collecting used stamps, you’ll need to know how to get the stamps off the envelopes without harming them. Here’s what to do: Tear or cut the envelope around the stamp, leaving a small margin. Then, according to the Smithsonian National Postal Museum, soak the stamp, face down, for a 15-20 minutes in cool water. Once the stamp floats free, remove it from the water using stamp tongs, dry it between paper towels and put a heavy book on it for a day, so it doesn’t curl. You can store stamps in an album or on loose leaf paper in a binder, by using stamp hinges, glassine strips with gum on one side, or stamp mounts, which are clear plastic sleeves. Transparent glassine envelopes can also protect your stamps from grease and air. Get yourself a stamp catalogue. The most common one in the U.S. is the Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue. That will give you an idea of how much different stamps are worth, based on how rare they are. Whether your stamps are mint or used, and what condition they’re in (if they are faded, stained, or torn) will also affect their price. Ask your local postmaster or librarian or visit www.usps.com for a listing of organizations. If you have more than a few stamps or are collecting rare stamps, you may want to protect your investment with the right type of insurance. Look for an insurance company that specializes in fine art and collectibles and will provide you with all-risk coverage. For a list of these subsidiaries, please visit our website at Chubb.com. Insurance provided by U.S. based underwriting companies. All products may not be available in all states.
