The mower could suddenly turn over if a wheel is over the edge of a cliff, ditch, or if an edge cave s in. 3. Do not try to stabilize th e machine by putting your foot on the grou nd. 4. Do not use a grass catcher on steep slopes. 5. Do not mow on wet grass. Reduced traction could cause sliding. 6. Do not shift to neutral an d coast downhill. Doing so may cause the operator to lo se control of the machine resulting in serious inju ry or death. 7. Do not tow heavy pull behind atta chments (e.g. loaded dump cart, lawn roller, etc. ) on slopes greater than 5 d egrees. When going down hill, the extra weight te nds to push the tracto r and may cause you to loose co ntrol. (e.g. tractor ma y speed up, braking and steerin g ability are reduced, attachment may jack- knife and cause tract or to overturn). Children are often attracted to the ma chine and the mowing activity. They do not under stand the dangers. Never assume that children will remain where you last saw them. a. Keep children out of the mowin g area and in watchful care o f a responsible adult other than the opera tor. b. Be alert and turn machine of f if a child enters the area. c. Bef ore and while backing, look behind and down for small children. d. Never carry children, even with the bla de(s) shut off. The y may fall o ff and be ser iously injured or interfer e with safe machine operation. e. Use extreme car e when approaching b lind corners, doorways, sh rubs, trees or other objects that may block your vision of a child who may run into th e machine. f. To avoid back-over ac cidents, always disengage the cutting blad e(s) before shifting i nto reverse. The “Rev erse Caution Mode” should not be used when children or others are ar ound. g. Keep children away from hot or running engines. They can suffer burns from a hot muffler. h. Remove key when machine is unattended to prevent unau thorized operation. 2. Never allow children und er 14 years old to operate the machine. Tow only w ith a machine that has a hitch designed for towing. Do not att ach towed equipment except at the hitch point. 2. Follow the manufa cturers recommendation for weight limits for towed equipm ent and towing on slopes. 3. Never allow children or others in or on towed equipment. 4. Do not tow heavy pull beh ind attachments (e.g. loaded dump cart, lawn roller, etc. ) on slopes greater than 5 degrees. Wh en going down hill, the extra weight tends to push the tr actor and may cause you to loose control. (e.g. tractor may speed up, braking and steering ability are reduced, attachmen t may jack-knife an d cause tract or to overturn). 5. Travel slowly and allow extra distance to stop. 6. On slopes, the weight of the towe d equipment m ay cause loss of traction and loss of cont rol. 7. Do not shift to neutral and c oast downhill. SERVICE SAFE HANDLING OF GASOLINE: 1. To avoid personal injur y or property damage use extreme care in handling gasoline. Gasolin e is extremely flammable and the vapors are explosive. Serious personal injury can occur wh en gasoline is spilled on yourself or your clothes which can ignite. Wash your skin and change clothes imme diately. a. Use only an ap proved gasoline containe r. b. Never fill containers inside a vehicle or on a truck or trailer be d with a plastic liner. Always place container s on the ground away from your vehicle before filling. c. When practical, remove ga s-powered equipment fro m the truck or trailer and refuel it on the ground. I f this is not possible, then refuel such equipment on a trailer with a portable co ntainer, ra ther than from a gasoline dispenser nozzle. d. Keep the n ozzle in contact wit h the rim of the fuel tank or container opening at all times until fueling is complete. Do not use a nozzle lock-open device. e. Extinguish all cigarett es, cigars, pipes and other sources of ignition. f. Never fuel ma chine indoors. g. Never remove gas cap or add fuel while the engine is hot or running. Allow engine to cool at least two minutes before r efueling. h. Never over fill fuel tank. Move unit to another area. Wait 5 minutes before st arting the engine. k. To reduce fire hazards, keep machine free of grass, leaves, or other d ebris build-u p. Clean up oil or fue l spillage and remove a ny fuel soaked deb ris. l. Never store the machine or fuel container inside where there is an ope n flame, spark or pilot light as on a water h eater, space heater, furnace, clothe s dryer or other gas appliances. m. Allow a machine to cool at least 5 minutes before sto ring. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an odorless, and de adly gas. 2. Before cleaning, repair ing, or inspecting, make certain the blade( s) and all moving parts have stopped.Re move the key to prev ent uninten ded starting. 3. Check the blade(s) and en gine mounting bolts at frequent inte rvals for proper tightness. Also, visually inspect bla de(s) for dam age (e.g., excessive wear, bent, cracked). Replace the blade(s) with t he original equipment manufacturer’s (O.E. M.) blade(s) only. Wrap the blade or wear gloves, and use extra caution when servicing them. 7. Keep all nuts, bolt s, and screws tight to be sure the equipment is in safe working condition. 8. NOTE: Your tractor’s battery cables may have already be attached at the factory.Setting the Gauge Wheels Select the height posit ion of the cutting deck by placing the deck lift lever in any of the six dif ferent cutting height notches on the ri ght fender. Adjust the deck whee ls so that they are between ?-in ch and ?-inch above the gr ound as follows. WARNING: Keep hands and feet away from the disch arge opening of the cutting deck. Place the tractor on a firm and level surfa ce, prefer ably pavement. Refer to Leveling the Deck on page 20 of this manual fo r more detailed inst ructions regard ing various deck adjustments. Hex Bolt Hex Nut Rubber Boot Hold Down Rod Shoulder Screw Lock Nut Lock Nut Shoulder Screw This lever controls the spee d of the engine. When set in a given positio n, the throttle will maintain a uniform engine speed. IMPORT ANT: When operating th e tractor with the cu tting deck engaged, be certain that the throttle lever is always in the FAST (rabbit) position. Choke Control The choke control can be fou nd on the left side of the da sh panel and is activated by pulling the knob outward. Activating t he choke control closes the choke plate on the carbu retor and aids in starting the engine. Refer to Starting The Engine on page 16 of this manual for detailed st arting instructions. Brake P edal The brake pedal is located on the right front side of the tractor ab ove the drive pedal along the runni ng board. The brake pedal can be used f or sudden stops or setting the parking br ake. NOTE: The brake pedal must be fully depressed when startin g the tract or. Shift Lever The shift lever is located on t he left side of the fe nder and has three position s, FORWARD, NEUTRAL and REVERSE. The brake pedal mu st be depresse d and the tr actor must not be in motion when the moving shift lever. IMPORT ANT: Never force th e shift lever. Doing so may result in serious damage to the tractor’s transmission. Deck Lift Lever Found on your tractor’s right fen der, the deck lift lever is used to ch ange the h eight of th e cutting deck. To u se, move the lever to the left, then place in the no tch best suited for yo ur application. Ignition Switch Module WARNING: Ne ver lea ve a running machine unattended. To start t he engine, insert the key into the ignition switch and turn clockwise to the START position. Release the key into the NORM AL MOWING MO DE position onc e the engin e has fired.
